Jeremy Goldstein: Finding an Attorney Just Got Easier

During disputes, most people would rather not get legal. Bringing lawyers into a situation adds a lot of pressure on everyone. Still, if the situation calls for a lawyer, people need to be able to find one easily. For New Yorkers, finding a lawyer has gotten much easier.

The Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) just launched a new online service. The online service is more convenient and easier to use. The service is available 24 hours a day at https://nysbalris.legal.io. If referred, New Yorkers can still use the old LRIS phone service.

According to State Bar President Claire Gutekunst, the online service offers a lower pressure way to find legal help. Rather than hire a questionable attorney, individuals can feel confident in being matched with a qualified attorney. Every attorney referred by the LRIS has outstanding credentials with the New York State Bar Association.

For the past 35 years, the LRIS has served New York residence. In 2016, the institution trained its staff to handle over 10,000 phone calls. The online portal helps mitigate incoming requests, easing the pressure off the State Bar staff. Individuals’ legal matters are reviewed to the same extent by both services.
